Obama and Putin cite differences on Syria but say they want violence to end
President Barack Obama and Russian President Vladimir Putin met Monday for the first time in more than a year, with the American leader hoping to persuade his counterpart to nudge the president of war-torn Syria to the negotiating table.Obama and Putin had a what was described as a "bilateral meeting" at the Group of Eight summit in Northern Ireland after Obama angered Moscow by authorizing military help for the rebels fighting Syrian President Bashar Assad.

Russia says it will not allow Syria no-fly zones
Russia, a veto-wielding member of the U.N. Security Council, will not permit no-fly zones to be imposed over Syria, Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said on Monday. "I think we fundamentally will not allow this scenario," Lukashevich stated at a news briefing, adding that calls for a no-fly zone showed disrespect for international law.

Egypt & Syria: The Tie That Binds No More
Over the weekend, Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi announced that he was cutting all ties with Syria, to include unilaterally ending the long-maintained diplomatic relationship between the two Arab countries and closing Egypt's embassy in Damascus.
