IDF video of Gaza Freedom Flotilla attack

May 31, 2010The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have released a video of Israeli Navy commandos boarding a ship in the 'Freedom Flotilla', a convoy carrying humanitarian aid and international activists to Gaza. Reports say up to 20 people were killed and dozens injured as Israeli commandos stormed the vessels over a hundred kilometres off Gaza's coast. Some of the ships have been towed to the Israeli port city of Ashdod.

Thai Protest Crushed: Video of bloody crackdown on Red Shirts in Bangkok

May 19, 2010In the Thai capital Bangkok, anti-government protesters have surrendered after an armed assault on their fortified encampment. Troops say the situations under control after 7 key 'Red Shirt' leaders gave themselves up to prevent further bloodshed. It comes after two protesters and an Italian news photographer were killed when the camp was stormed. 42 people have died and more than 300 injured in clashes during the last week. Demonstrators had been calling for resignation of the Primer and fresh elections.

Latvia: An Ailing Economy on the Road to Recovery

May 13, 2010 — Two years ago, Latvia was on the brink of bankruptcy. The government obtained loans from the International Monetary Fund and the European Union, and in return had to undertake drastic financial cuts. Now the Latvian economy is on the upswing again.Times have been tough in Latvia. Wages and pensions were slashed, and schools let go half of their teaching staff. Now the painful measures are starting to pay off. Unemployment is still at 20 percent and investment remains low, but Riga is optimistic that the Latvian economy will return to growth in the second half of 2010. Some Latvians cite the years under Soviet rule, when the nation was forced to learn great patience and fortitude, as one of the reasons they were able to stay the course.
