Any sign that Syria's grip on its chemical weapons is slipping as it battles an armed uprising could trigger Israeli military strikes, Israel's vice premier said on Sunday.

Silvan Shalom confirmed a media report that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had last week convened a meeting of security chiefs to discuss the civil war in Syria and the state of its suspected chemical arsenal.

Israel and NATO countries say Syria has stocks of chemical warfare agents at four sites. Syria is cagey about whether it has such arms but says if it had it would keep them secure and use them only to fend off foreign attack.

The Israeli meeting on Wednesday had not been publicly announced and was seen as unusual as it came while votes were being counted from Israel's parliamentary election the day before, which Netanyahu's party list won narrowly.

Should Lebanon's Hezbollah guerrillas or rebels battling forces loyal to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad obtain Syria's chemical weapons, Shalom told Israel's Army Radio: "It would dramatically change the capabilities of those organizations."

Such a development would be "a crossing of all red lines that would require a different approach, including even preventive operations," he said, alluding to military intervention for which Israeli generals have said plans have been readied.

"The concept, in principle, is that this (chemical weapons transfer) must not happen," Shalom said. "The moment we begin to understand that such a thing is liable to happen, we will have to make decisions."

Israeli media said on Sunday the military had deployed two "Iron Dome" rocket interceptor batteries near the northern city of Haifa, an area near the Lebanese and Syrian frontiers.

A military spokesman confirmed the report but insisted the battery placement was "not due to any specific security situation" but part of a routine of rotating these systems.

Difficult coalition talks could be ahead for Netanyahu with factions representing widely different sectors of the Jewish state's population.

In his public remarks at the cabinet session, Netanyahu pointed to "what is happening in Iran and its proxies and at what is happening in other areas, with the deadly weapons in Syria, which is increasingly coming apart.

"In the east, north and south, everything is in ferment and we must be prepared, strong and determined in the face of all possible developments," Netanyahu said, in apparent reference to Iran, Syria and Egypt.

Raising the regional stakes, Iran, among Assad's few allies and itself long the subject of Israeli military threats over its nuclear program, said on Saturday it would deem any attack on Syria an attack on itself.

The beings that were invading were called Archons. These Archons had the ability to duplicate reality, to fool us. They were jealous of us because we have an essence of some kind, a soul, that they don't possess, and the Nag Hammadi texts describe the Archons. One looks like a reptile and the other looks like an unformed baby or a foetus. It is partially living and partially non-living and has grey skin and dark, unmoving eyes. Weidner: Yes, according to the texts, they can get into people and can manipulate people to do things very suddenly that are very odd. But also they are actually responsible for the deterioration of culture, so unlike the culture of the ancient Greeks or Chinese but a cheap façade of a culture. As the Archonic presence has spread across the earth and has escalated in the 20th century, you can see that they are responsible for sprawl and the mass ugliness that is everywhere.

An Israeli airstrike has hit a military research centre north west of Damascus, the Syrian army has claimed. In a statement carried by the state news agency, SANA, the Syrian army's general command said: "Israeli fighter jets violated our air space at dawn today and carried out a direct strike on a scientific research centre in charge of raising our level of resistance and self-defence." The claims followed earlier reports that Israeli jets had hit a convoy allegedly carrying weapons to Lebanon's Hizbollah movement. According to Sky sources, the attack took place just inside Syria. "We know from sources that the Israelis have conducted an airstrike involving three sorties by 12 planes - a very heavy airstrike, a high level of intent - on the village of Nabi Chit, near the bigger Syrian town of Zabadani. "It's inside Syrian territory, therefore representing a possible strategic escalation. "I'm told by security sources that were not directly involved that the most likely target were either shore-to-ship missiles - very sophisticated missiles of the kind used by Hizbollah against an Israeli ship a few years ago off the coast of Lebanon - or sophisticated anti-aircraft missiles, both of which the Damascus regime have access to from Russia. "They are recently understood to have taken substantial imports of these from Russia. "Why are they such a worry to the Israelis? If Hizbollah were to get access to such anti-shipping missiles and particularly to very sophisticated anti-aircraft missiles, it would prevent the Israelis carrying out just the sort of airstrike that they've just done - it would shift the balance towards Hizbollah. "Israel has always enjoyed air superiority in the region, and it would lose it if these missiles were able to find the way into Hizbollah's hands. "There is less of a suggestion that it was targeting chemical weapons." It was not immediately clear whether both the Sky sources and the Syrian media were referring to the same airstrike. The alleged airstrike came after Iran warned that any attack on Syria would be seen as an attack on Iran. Ali Akbar Velayati, a senior aide to Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, told Iran's semi-official Mehr news agency that Syria played a crucial role in the "golden resistance chain" against Israel and the United States. The Iran-led "resistance" front includes Syria, Lebanon-based Hezbollah and the Palestinian group Hamas. He said: "An attack on Syria would be considered an attack on Iran and Iran's allies." An Israeli military spokeswoman declined to comment on the reported attack inside Syria.
