Historian Niall Ferguson fears a post-American world would bear close resemblance to the Dark Ages that followed the decline of the Roman Empire. He foresees chaos across the Middle East and the rise of China as the next superpower. "A world without a strong America is a dangerous world," he exclaims.
I normally like Niall but I don't think that it will be a new dark age.When Rome collapsed it was the dark ages in Europe only, a dark age for only about 8% of the world whereas in the rest of the world we couldn't care about Europe.

The problem here is the morbid misunderstanding of culture as implying power blocks and centralization. The previous application of these principles in the Roman Empire and its offshoots and later in its colonization of the rest of the world has certainly brought this centralization scheme to the fore on the part of other aggregates, such as China and also Islam as a political and violent movement; and I think this is of course dangerous. But it is important to realise that other modes of relationships not developed by Rome and long since suppressed would be the alternatives for peace, but that encouragement has never existed in the Roman context.
