US to use drones on its own soil

The planned use of unmanned aircraft in U-S airspace has been one of the biggest stories in the country in recent months. This week, federal officials sought proposals to create six drone test sites around the country. The Federal Aviation Administration is the governing body that would allow the drones to be flown in US airspace. The FAA posted an online draft plan for privacy protection. The plan would require test sites to follow federal and state laws and to allow regulations to be viewed publicly. However, many are skeptical that privacies will be protected.

Privacy advocates worry that the spread of drones will add to the surveillance that Americans already experience online. They say it could lead to a big brother, surveillance society. Federal officials are moving on a law enacted a year ago to develop sites where civilian and military drones can be tested for integration into US airspace. Right now, much of the skies are limited to manned flight. The US government seeks to use drones that are relatively cheap to use and wide scoping in their application. Engineers have created drones as small as a hummingbird and as large as 15,000 pound machines. The biggest markets are expected to be local and state police departments.

But in this evolving cyber age, there are fears that the digital link between the operator and the drone would be hacked or broken which could endanger the public. Yet still, the interest to use drones increases--worrying even national security experts. The FAA predicts that an estimated 10,000 civilian drones will be used in the US by 2018. The administration of US president Barack Obama has already given permissions for drones to be used at some universities, police departments and other government agencies.

During the first three hours, well-known voice of occult and esoteric ideas, Mitch Horowitz discussed how the occult is very much part of American history. Though there are many different aspects to the occult, there's a shared belief in the idea that an invisible realm exists beside our own, he explained. Occultists in America, who got their start in the 1600s, differentiated themselves from their European counterparts, by using occult practices and ideas as tools of self-help, and to promote social progress. In fact, the American colonies quickly became known as a haven for the religiously liberal, and unorthodox, he detailed.

The spiritualism movement swept over the country in the mid 19th century, and seances were even held at the White House with President Lincoln. Spiritualism, with its emphasis on female mediums, helped foster the women's rights movement, Horowitz commented. Franklin Roosevelt's Vice President, Henry Wallace, had a heavy interest in the occult, and it was he that suggested the design of eye over the pyramid for the US currency, which first appeared on the dollar in 1935. Ronald and Nancy Reagan were known for their devotion to astrology, and under the advice of astrologer Carroll Righter, his inauguration in 1967 as California's governor took place at the odd time of 12:10 AM.

The 'positive thinking' philosophy is as "American as apple pie," and was developed in the mid-19th century by Phineas Quimby, who believed that sickness and bad fortune could be related to one's thought process. Mary Baker Eddy, the founder of Christian Science, was said to be influenced by Quimby, Horowitz noted. He also talked about the Ouija Board, the "game" marketed by Parker Brothers. While there have been a lot of frightening tales associated with it, some have had positive experiences, such as the poet James Merrill who said his epic prize-winning poem, The Changing Light at Sandover, was channeled through the board.

Are We Living in The Matrix

Jim Blascovich and Jeremy Bailenson, two pioneering experts in the field of virtual reality, joined Ian Punnett to reveal when we all might be living in the Matrix. "Virtual reality, for us, is any reality that's not a person's grounded reality," Blascovich said. We go back and forth between virtual and grounded realities all of the time, without the use of technology, through our mind wanderings and dreams, he continued. "There's different types of virtual realities and there's even a lack of separation among them," Bailenson added, citing how the digital environs of the online role-playing game World of Warcraft reportedly seeps into the dream lives of hardcore players.

According to Bailenson, we are at the cusp of a future where virtual reality is commonplace. New 'glasses-free 3D' autostereoscopic displays (as seen in Nintendo's 3DS), suit-less movement tracking (similar to Microsoft's Kinect), and advances in artificial intelligence, will combine to allow people to do things they could not actually do in the physical world, he explained. For instance, a person conducting a digital meeting or teaching a virtual class can program an avatar (graphical representation of a user) to maintain eye contact with every single participant, which focus attention on the speaker, Blascovich noted. Bailenson offered a more insidious example of a person morphing the appearance and sound of an avatar to ingratiate and manipulate different audiences.

The two also commented on how virtual reality may be utilized by the porn industry as well as delved into the concept of digital immortality, where one's avatar continues beyond its user's physical life. Bailenson pointed to a commercial for microwave popcorn that uses a digital recreation of deceased founder Orville Redenbacher, and imagined a day when grandchildren could interact with digital versions of their deceased grandparents. Virtual reality does not allow a person to actually live forever, nor will it ever replace one's consciousness, Blascovich added.

He is currently (2010-2011) a Visiting Scholar at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences at Stanford. Jim is a past President of both the Society for Personality and Social Psychology and the Society of Experimental Social Psychology. He is a Member of the Academy of Behavioral Medicine Research, a Charter Fellow of the American Psychological Society, and a Fellow of the American Psychological Association. His research has been continuously funded by the National Science Foundation for more than 20 years and has been supported by the National Institutes of Health, the Army Research Laboratory, and other agencies.  UPDATE: 1000 INJURED - A Russian health official says nearly 1,000 people have sought help for injuries caused by a meteor that exploded in the sky, blasting out countless windows. Chelyabinsk health chief Marina Moskvicheva, said Friday that 985 people in her city had asked for medical assistance. The Interfax news agency quoted her as saying 43 were hospitalized. The Russian Academy of Sciences said the meteor -- estimated to be about 10 tons -- entered the Earth's atmosphere going at least 33,000 mph. It shattered about 18-32 miles above the ground, releasing several kilotons of energy above the Ural Mountains.A number of lurid claims are being made in connection with today's meteor shower over Russia, including obscure reports that the meteor was shot down by Russian air defenses, as well as a claim by controversial Russian political leader Vladimir Zhirinovsky that the meteor was in fact a secret US weapon aimed at Russia.

Pediatrician and neuroscientist Dr. Melvin Morse spoke about remote viewing, children's near-death experiences (NDEs), as well as consciousness research and mind-body healing. Remote viewing and near-death experiences share certain aspects, he noted. For instance, remote viewers draw what they call the "aperture" -- a big long tunnel that is followed by a rainbow, and NDErs describe traveling through a tunnel filled with light. "When we die we have...the loss of input from all of our senses-- that's the darkness that people perceive, then we dip back into that billion bits of information," the sensory stream that is the rainbow of light, he explained.

Children's reports of NDEs are special because "they tell you exactly what they see and feel...without any of the added embellishments," said Morse, citing the case of a little girl who was clinically dead, and after resuscitation said she was "shocked to see her [deceased] grandmother." Studies of energetic healers have shown they can shrink tumors, yet in general they have not been employed for this purpose, he reported. Morse foresees that within the next 10-15 years the use of such healers will become commonplace.

Interestingly, new research has found that birds use remote viewing for navigation, applying non-local processes to gather information if just for a few micro-seconds, he shared. Dr. Morse will be speaking at two upcoming conferences-- The International Remote Viewing Association (IRVA), on how remote viewing can be used to treat PTSD, and the IIIHS Conference in Montreal in July.

Dr. Melvin Morse has researched near death experiences in children and adults for over 15 years. His interest evolved from his experiences working in Critical Care Medicine at Seattle Children's Hospital. Dr. Morse graduated from George Washington University School of Medicine, interned in Pediatrics at the University of California at San Francisco, and then completed a residency in Pediatrics at Seattle Children's Hospital.

He is also a Clinical Associate Professor of Pediatrics at University of Washington. His research has been featured in documentaries in several countries, and he has appeared on numerous television and radio shows. In addition, he has authored several books on the subject of near death experiences.
